Herbert was born in 1892 in Limpsfield, Surrey and was the son of gamekeeper John and Emma Richards nee Dodd of Shelford. His father was born in 1868 in Limpsfield, Surrey his mother Emma Dodd was born in 1866 in Buckfastleigh, Devon , they were married in 1891 in Buckfastleigh Devon . They had 5 children Herbert b1892 Limpsfiled, Norman b1893 Cranleigh, Alec b1895 Hrringfield, Suffolk, Evelyn b1898 Shelford and Leslie b1902 Shelford. The family were living in Shelford from the time of the birth of their daughter Evelyn in 1898 and in the 1901 and 1911 census were listed as living in the village of Shelford. He married his wife Elizabeth Dawn in 1913 , their marriage was recorded in the Bingham Registration District. they lived at East Bridgeford. Commencing 26th November 1915 his widow was awarded a pension of 10 shillings a week. His widow re married 19th June 1916 to Trooper Walter Pacey of the South Notts Hussars.
Sapper Herbert Richards enlisted at Birmingham whilst residing in Shelford, he initially served with service number 1066 in the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment. He landed in Egypt on 30th March 1915 . It was whilst he was serving with his regiment 1st West Riding Field Company Royal Engineers that he was killed in action on 25th May 1915. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on Helles Memorial. Panel 23-25, or 325-328.
In memoriam published 25th May 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “RICHARDS. – In loving memory of Sapper Herbert Richards, R.E., killed in action Dardanelles, May 25th, 1915. – Not forgotten by his mother, father, sister, and brothers. “RICHARDS. – In loving memory of Herbert, the loved husband of Elizabeth Richards, killed in action 25th of May, 1915.
